New Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez is reportedly keen on acquiring experienced Spanish playmaker Juan Mata upon the expiry of his current Manchester United contract.
The 33-year-old has featured only three times so far this season for United and is free to negotiate a new deal with overseas clubs from January 1st.
A return to his native country would see him return to La Liga after a 10-year hiatus, following his move from Valencia to Chelsea back in 2011.
According to reports published in the Daily Star, the Catalan giants attempted to lure the 2010 World Cup winner away from Old Trafford last summer, with Mata opting to extend his stay at United by a further 12 months.
With his game time limited this season in the North West, United may look to offload the Spaniard and bring in other midfield options suited around interim boss Ralf Rangnick’s playing style.
Furthermore, it’s been claimed the Reds are also ‘prepared to battle’ Premier League rivals Chelsea, in a race to sign young Sevilla defender Jules Kounde.
Kounde, 23, who was a major target for Thomas Tuchel’s side this summer, has again been linked with Chelsea ahead of the January window. And United have been touted for a move as well.
With contract talks between Chelsea and German defender Antonio Rudiger currently at a stand still, the former Bordeaux man could be seen as his potential replacement, but does come with an eye watering release clause of £68million.
However, as The Sun have reported, United could match the offer brought to the table by rivals Chelsea, in a bid to bring Kounde to the club later this summer.
