Legendary San Beda coach Ato Badolato dies


Ato Badolato etched his name in Philippine basketball lore as he transformed the San Beda Red Cubs into a dynasty and helped produce several PBA icons

MANILA, Philippines – Legendary high school coach Edmundo “Ato” Badolato died on Sunday, December 19, due to heart attack.

The former San Beda Red Cubs mentor was 74.

Red Lions team manager Jude Roque confirmed the news on social media.

“Sad day for the Bedan community as legendary high school basketball coach Ato Badolato passes away,” Roque wrote on Facebook.

Badolato etched his name in Philippine basketball lore as he transformed the Red Cubs into a dynasty, leading San Beda to 16 NCAA juniors championships.

He also produced several PBA icons, most notably Benjie Paras and Ronnie Magsanoc, both of whom are members of the 25 Greatest PBA Players list.

Among the active PBA players who thrived under the tutelage of Badolato include Barangay Ginebra star LA Tenorio and Blackwater veteran JVee Casio.

After his coaching career, Badolato went on to serve as athletic director of San Beda and commissioner of the UAAP.

Prior to his death, Badolato survived a heart attack in November. – Rappler.com
