Jada Ward made 12 saves and Genoa Rossi and Olivia Krotts each scored twice to help Mater Dei’s girls water polo team upset Orange Lutheran 6-4 in a Trinity League match Thursday at Santiago Canyon College.

The USC-bound Ward recorded two of her saves late in regulation as the Monarchs (7-3, 1-0), ranked sixth in Division 1, knocked off the No. 2 Lancers (8-5, 1-1).

Indiana-commit Grace Klinger added four steals to help lead Mater Dei’s defense.

The Monarchs pulled the surprise after dropping matches to Los Alamitos (8-7) and Foothill (10-7) on Saturday. They also cooled off Orange Lutheran, which beat Laguna Beach on Saturday behind seven goals by UCLA-bound Anna Pearson.

Mater Dei plays host to defending league champion Santa Margarita next Thursday in another match with league title ramifications.

Orange Lutheran plays Santa Margarita on Feb. 3.
