Mom Backed for Refusing To Give Up Dogs As Husband’s Affair Kid Is Allergic

A mom has been backed for refusing to get rid of her beloved dogs, despite her husband’s affair child being allergic.

The woman shared her situation to Reddit‘s popular Am I The A**hole forum, under username Bitter_Mistake_7214, as she asked for advice.

The mom-of-two admitted her husband had an affair a few years ago, “unfortunately” resulting in a pregnancy, and he has now has a three-year-old boy.

She explained they share a 14-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son, as well as two French Bulldogs, who are five.

The mom said: “My husband had a one night stand, and after much counseling I decided to forgive him and work on our marriage.

“Unfortunately being short hair dogs these kind tend to produce the most reaction in those who are allergic.”

After forgiving him, she was also able to accept the child in her life, but there was a massive obstacle in the way.

“I was fully prepared to welcome this child into my home with open arms and be the best stepmother I could possibly be, as the child is innocent and he is the little brother of my two children. My husband has visitation every other weekend.

“Unfortunately, this child is highly allergic to dogs, and his mother is demanding that we get rid of the dogs. These dogs have been with me through thick and thin, they were there with me when I suffered severe depression over my husband cheating and my kids adore them too,” she said.

She’s decided to keep her pets, as she relayed the options she gave her husband, saying: “I absolutely refuse to get rid of these dogs, and I told my husband he can either do the visitation at a hotel, get a second apartment for him and his son, or we can build an in-law unit at his expense above the garage, but I told him my only stipulations are that this comes out of his own pocket, and he may not dip into our kids college funds and the dogs stay.

“Because the child is so young he doesn’t understand why he’s not allowed to come to the house and feels left out as a result.”

She added: “AITA for refusing to get rid of my dogs because my husband cheated? When he was hemming and hawing because he wanted to be all things to all people I told him I will divorce him well before I do away with the dogs.”

The post, shared on Wednesday, has amassed more than 11,000 upvotes and comments, and people urged her to keep the dogs.

Chaosandpuppies wrote: “Keep the dogs. Get rid of husband. NTA. Wild that the woman who had an affair with your husband thinks she gets to dictate to you what animals you can have in your home.”

“Keep the dogs! Re-home the husband!” 81312 commented.

I absolutely refuse to get rid of these dogs.”

Carmachu agreed, saying: “This. NTA. Get rid of the husband and keep the dogs. The home wrecker has no business telling you to get rid of your dogs in your home.”

Forsaken_Raccoon_362 thought: “A one night stand while you’re married is an affair, and most ESPECIALLY leading to the birth of an illegitimate child. NTA. You didn’t do this to yourself, OP, your husband did this. It’s his problem. She’s not a victim now, given that she’s making demands she has no place to be.”

Chapstick777 said: “The woman might not have much of a choice about [who] her kid gets to visit. Court ordered is court ordered. I feel bad for both women in this case.”

Winter_fun4268 pointed out: “To be fair the “other woman” may not have known she was sleeping with a married man. Plenty of men lie about being married. Don’t budge on the dogs though. The dogs are more loyal than your husband. Keep the dogs.”

MySquishyFishy raged: “Nta. Jeeze Louise. The homewrecker is making demands?? Seriously, she can go scratch herself. She’s already been shown more grace by you than she deserves. Make sure your husband knows your promise to leave him isn’t an empty threat.”

While Koushunu added: “If it comes at the health of her child she does. Stop blaming her. But yes, op has a right to keep the dogs.”

Explaining more about allergies, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) said they cause varying reactions, including coughing, sneezing, hives, rashes, itchy eyes, and even death.

There’s no cure, but they can be managed, with some of the most common triggers being medicines, food, and insect stings.

They stated as many as 3 in 10 people have an allergic reaction to fur, with cat allergies more common than dogs.

Although, the AAFA stressed: “People with pet allergies have over-sensitive immune systems. They can react to harmless proteins in the pet’s urine, saliva or dander (dead skin cells).”

They noted it can cause friction in social settings, saying: “Pet allergy can be a social problem making it difficult to visit friends and relatives who have cats and dogs (and sometimes horses and other animals.)

“This may be especially troublesome for children who cannot participate in activities at the home of friends.”
