Newcastle urged against Anthony Martial signing from Manchester United amid transfer links

Tony Cascarino has warned Newcastle United amid links with Anthony Martial to St James’ Park as he talked up their interest in Manchester United target Kieran Trippier instead.

The Frenchman’s time at Old Trafford seems to be destined for its conclusion after his agent Philippe Lamboley spoke out on the player’s unhappiness at a lack of game time for United this season.

Martial has fallen down the pecking order at the club in light of the reinforcements United have brought in to bolster the attacking department in the past six months.

The 26-year-old is said to be eyeing a January move while Atletico Madrid star Trippier has been on the radar of United since last summer. But the former Spurs man is also being linked with Newcastle following their Saudi-backed takeover.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was very much the first choice at right back until Diogo Dalot’s recent form has made him a starter under Ralf Rangnick. United wanted to bring in Trippier in the summer to rival Wan-Bissaka.

On Martial, Cascarino believes the Frenchman wouldn’t be a “worthwhile player” needed to help raise Eddie Howe’s side from the jaws of Premier League relegation.

He told talkSPORT: “Anthony at his best, yes. Anthony at his worst, no. I think there’s a real talent in there that shows what he can do at times. I just don’t think he has the consistency to be a worthwhile player for Newcastle during the second part of the season.

“Kieran Trippier is a great offensive footballer, he’s got a wonderful right foot, he really has,” he said on the Reds target. “You can even switch him on the left, you can play him either side so I would see that as a versatile full-back that you can utilise and if you can bring someone of that stature and his experience. I thought he was unlucky at the Euros, he didn’t do anything wrong.

“There’s been times at Atletico where he’s shown, he would’ve learned a lot playing abroad and being a better player so I absolutely could give that a thumbs up [a move to Newcastle].”
