Six people have been left with injuries after a serious crash between a car and a lorry on the M60.
The incident happened shortly after 7.30pm on the anti-clockwise stretch of the motorway between junctions 16 and 17.
One woman was left with serious injuries and was trapped in her car, meaning fire crews had to cut her out.
All traffic was held shortly after, with many drivers stuck in queues for more than three hours this evening, December 19.
The incident sparked a huge emergency response, with police, fire and ambulance crews all rushing to the scene.
The motorway was completely closed off shortly after.
Cars were stuck within the closure until after 10.30pm, with one person calling it the ‘scariest aftermath’ of a crash she had ever seen.
Numerous 999 calls were made by people stuck in the growing congestion, according to the fire service.
A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 19.30 this evening firefighters from Whitefield, Agecroft, and Broughton fire stations, and the Technical Rescue Unit from Ashton responded to the first of many 999 calls about a road traffic collision on the M60 anticlockwise between junctions 17 and 16.
“Two vehicles are involved and four people are injured. One person was trapped in a damaged vehicle but was rescued by firefighters.”

People trapped within the closure took to Twitter in a rage after emergency crews had their access blocked due to drivers using the closed lanes.
Others complained about ‘hundreds’ of drivers using the closed lanes and hard shoulder in a bid to escape the queues.
One person tweeted: “That on the M60 might be the scariest aftermath of a car crash I’ve ever seen!
“There’s 12 police cars, eight fire engines and a car crashed into the central reservation with no roof, no engine block, nothing. Traffic is backed for miles!”
Another added: “All those injured I hope you recover well, and all those idiots putting more people at risk by not adhering to the very big red X’s, I hope you never have to get the phone call saying your loved one is involved in something like this.”
Police confirmed that five people had suffered minor injuries, with one woman taken to hospital with more serious injuries.
A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 7.30pm on Sunday 19 th December, officers were called to a report of a collision between a car and a lorry close to junction 16 of the M60 anti-clockwise.
“Officers attended in company with the Ambulance and Fire Service, and established that a female has suffered serious injuries, with five others receiving minor injuries.
“Members of the public are advised to avoid this section of the motorway as there are significant delays due to the incident.”
