The Sandy Liang and Vans Collaboration Is Full of ’90s Nostalgia

Vans is collaborating with designer Sandy Liang again for a ’90s-inspired collection with nods to New York City, anime, and grandmas. She reimagined some of Van’s classic styles for the new line.

Vans previously worked with Liang in 2021 for a capsule collection inspired by the Nickelodeon show SpongeBob SquarePants. This time around, Liang took inspiration from childhood and her personal connection to New York City. In fact, she even gave a shoutout to her part of the city with an embroidered “LES Lover” for the Lower East Side on the Style 73 DX shoes she designed for the new collaboration.

However, this isn’t the first time Liang has found her muse in New York City. In 2018, she shared that her fall collection was inspired by the grandmas of Chinatown. She similarly considered grandmas and their sense of style when designing this new line for Vans. The influence is seen in the lace details, fleece fabric, prints, and embroidery featured throughout the collection.
